West Penn Amateur Rescheduled for Late August at Allegheny CC

Almost two months after it was initially scheduled to be played, the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s annual Amateur Championship has been reset for Aug. 24-25 at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley.

The 120th West Penn Am was on track for July 6-7, but days before the event the Allegheny County Health Department instituted a renewed ban on large gatherings due to spiking numbers of COVID-19 cases in the area.

Although that ban only lasted several days, the challenge for the WPGA was finding a week on which there were no other major regional competitions.

Due to concerns about excessive interpersonal contact, the 120th WPGA Amateur was already set to include a smaller field than usual (54 players) and last just 36 holes, as opposed to the usual 54. Peters Township High School alum and current Drexel University standout Connor Schmidt is the defending West Penn Amateur champ, as he outlasted the competition at Oakmont Country Club last July.

As the governing body for amateur competition in western Pennsylvania, the WPGA already cancelled most of its team-oriented events out of caution. But the Amateur, the Open (Aug. 4-5 at Shannopin CC) and the Four-Ball Championship (Aug. 18 at Chartiers CC) are all scheduled to be played this summer.
